Trade Tracker The catfish market Pangasius from Vietnam dominates import market T his month's col- umn focus is on U.S. catfish im- ports, including Pan- gasius, Silurus, Clarias and Ictalurus. Nearly all catfish imports arrive to the United States as frozen fillets. Small portions are imported in the fresh or chilled forms. Te origin of the major- ity of these imports is Vietnam, followed by smaller amounts from China and Brazil. Catfish imports in January amounted to more than $46 mil- lion, while in June imports were about $29 million. Te ports of arrival for the shipments are widespread through- out the United States. With its proximity to Asia, it's no wonder the port of Los Ange- les takes the top spot, followed by the ports of Newark and New York, respectively. Overall, U.S. catfish imports make up 3 percent of all import- ed seafood. For an in-depth look at the market for pangasius in the United States, see the July issue of SeaFood Business, page 24.
