Global News PAHANG, Malaysia N ew research into early mortality syndrome (EMS) in farmed shrimp has determined that poor water quality triggers the condition that has decimated crops in Southeast Asia. Te Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA) frst released the research from Noriaki Akazawa, managing director of Agrobest Sdn. Bhd. in Malaysia, along with Kinki University and the National Research Institute of Aquaculture in Japan, but it is expected to appear in a peerreviewed journal as well. "Te research results are LONDON EU seeks to unlock farming potential EU aquaculture production has stagnated over the last decade, producing a modest 1.3 million metric tons (MT) annually with a value of €3.1 billion ($4 billion). Te sector's underperformance is further illustrated by the widening gap between production and consumption: 10 percent of seafood consumption comes from EU aquaculture, 25 percent from EU fsheries and the remaining 65 percent from imports. In the European Commission's eyes, though, European aquaculture has signifcant growth potential, which is why aquaculture reform is an "essential opportunity" of the incoming Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), says Viktoria Varga Lencses, DG Mare, EU Commission. In her keynote address, given at the recent Shellfsh Association of Great Britain's 44th annual conference in London, Lencses said 50 percent encouraging because they provide shrimp farmers with a tool to improve management of the disease in ponds," GAA stated. EMS, or Acute Hepatopancreatic Necrosis Syndrome, has been blamed for the deaths of millions of shrimp in aquaculture pens throughout the region, and reportedly costs the industry there an estimated $1 billion (€753.5 million) per year. Six weeks prior, a diferent research project determined that a bacterial agent ultimately causes the disease, but the new research suggests a higher of global seafood consumption is already being satisfed by aquaculture, a fgure set to rise to 65 percent by 2030. A pH level of 7 is considered normal; levels lower than that mean the water and management of bycatch and discards. Te committee is expected to vote on July 10. BEIJING BRUSSELS European leaders hammer out final CFP reforms An overnight series of negotiations by the European Parliament produced a preliminary agreement on a fnal version of the CFP that critics argue is overdue for reform. An ofcial statement from the parliament had not yet been released, but CFP Reform Watch, set up by some of the parliament members for tracking the CFP's progress, indicated on May 30 the parliament "reached political agreement on the main points" of the CFP with the council. Te CFP still needs approval of the Committee of Permanent Representatives, a body representing each of the EU member states. Key issues for environmental protection groups that have been calling for reform are how to set quotas to protect fsh stocks, For updated NEWS, go to www.SeafoodSource.com China poised for even greater seafood growth Te average Chinese citizen will be eating 42.6 kilograms (kg) of fsh in 2022, an average annual increase of 1.5 percent over the next decade, meaning China as a whole will consume 63 million MT of fsh by then. Tat's an increase of 26 percent on current fgures, according to new projections from the U.N.'s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and is acidic, while a level higher than 7 indicates a presence of alkali, or base. In the latest research, scientists studied an Agrobest farm in Pahang, Malaysia, which was growing Pacifc white shrimp and black tiger shrimp before the disease appeared. While the disease eventually spread throughout the farm, scientists traced the outbreak back to pools where the pH level was between 8.5 and 8.8, while pools with a pH level closer to 7 had no sign of the disease before it began spreading. Te scientists believe this means shrimp farmers can stem the disease by controlling the pH level in their pools. Development (OECD), compiled in cooperation with the Chinese agriculture ministry. China will have 69 million MT of fsheries output from aquaculture and capture in 2022, a 26 percent increase on the average level recorded between 2010 and 2012, according to a report by the OECD in cooperation with the FAO. At a conference for Chinese agricultural experts and ofcials, the agricultural output published by the two organizations projects that production from aquaculture will rise by 37 percent by 2022 — 53 million MT, or 63 percent of global aquaculture output — while fsheries production will slide by 3 percent.
