ALASKAS
LEADERSHIP IN
SUSTAINABILITY
FACT:
Alaska is committed to preserving wild seafood for future generations to enjoy.
Since 1959, the Alaska State Constitution has mandated management of shery resources
on the sustained yield principle - the only state in the country with such explicit
conservation language.
The Alaska seafood industry is the states largest employer, providing over 70,000 jobs.
Beyond the constitutional mandate, Alaskas salmon, halibut, black-cod, pollock and crab
sheries are independently, third-party certied to the United Nations Food and Agriculture
Organizations (FAO) Guidelines for Responsible Fisheries Management (RFM) and Guidelines
for Eco-labelling of Fish and Fishery Products from Marine Capture Fisheries.
This internationally recognized standard was developed with the participation of the worlds
leading shery biologists, environmental organizations and shery managers representing
more than seventy countries.
The RFM utilizes a certier who is accredited to the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO). That means this model is veriable and transparent.
Continuous improvement is built into the governance structure in Alaska.
Alaska sets the standard for science-based precautionary resource management:
- NO stocks threatened or endangered
- NO species of Alaska seafood has ever been listed as endangered under the
Endangered Species Act
