News Recap PORTLAND, Maine Catfsh farming and processing company Heartland Catfsh earned the Global Aquaculture Alliance's Best Aquaculture Practices certifcation. The plant, located in Itta Bena, Miss., processes 60 to 75 million pounds of live fsh per year from the company's farms in Mississippi, Alabama and Arkansas. The San Francisco Chapter of the Association for Corporate Growth gave Wild Planet Foods of McKinleyville, Calif., its 2013 Corporate Growth Award, which spotlights dynamic growth in recent years. Wild Planet CEO Terry Hunt credited, among other things, the company's "marine conservation mission" for its success. Diversifed partners with SeaWeb, Seafood Summit D iversifed Communications, owner of SeaFood Business, partnered with SeaWeb of Washington, D.C., to produce the International Seafood Summit, the world's premier conference on sustainable seafood. Te solution-driven event is aimed at advancing sustainability by integrating science, policy and Louisiana's Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne hired Karen Profta to be the new executive director of the Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board. Profta, who has worked in marketing, nonproft and fundraising for the past 20 years, takes over the position after a three-month search following Ewell Smith's resignation in August. High Liner Foods of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, partnered with Frontier Central School District in Hamburg, N.Y., to raise awareness about sustainable and healthy seafood choices. An event in November kicked off the "The Sa-Weetest Promotion," which allows school foodservice directors to create in-school promotions that introduce students to High Liner's Sa-Weet! Potato Crusted Seafood product line. The organizing committee for the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games will promote seafood that has been certifed by the Marine Stewardship Council and Aquaculture Stewardship Council. The games, to be held in Rio de Janeiro, will offer only certifed seafood to the athletes, offcials and press, and in all onsite restaurants. An estimated 14 million meals will be served over 27 days. Cooke Aquaculture of Blacks Harbor, New Brunswick, joined forces with the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada and Dalhousie University to create the new Cooke Industrial Research Chair in Sustainable Aquaculture. SeaWeb, a nonproft organization dedicated to using the science of communications to advance ocean conservation, will collaborate with Diversifed on conference content development and strategy. Diversifed will manage and produce the Seafood Summit on an annual basis. Te International Seafood Summit brings together global representatives from the seafood industry with leaders from the conservation community, academia, government and the media for in-depth discussions, presentations and networking around the issue of sustainable seafood. Diversifed and SeaWeb will also collaborate on the development of an advisory board that will help guide the direction of future Summits. Te next event will be held in New Orleans; dates are expected to be released this month. SeafoodSource.com, Diversifed's online publication, will be the ofcial industry media for the summit.
