In BRIEF Per-capita seafood consumption drops again A ccording to the federal government's "Fisheries of the United States 2012" report, the average American ate 14.4 pounds of seafood in 2012, a 4 percent drop from the 2011 fgure of 15.0 pounds. Online seafood business community FishChoice added Verlasso as its only farmed Atlantic salmon supplier, following its yellow (good alternative) rating by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch program, which FishChoice uses to make purchase references. Additionally, all Verlasso distribution partners will be included on FishChoice. Verlasso also partnered with three retailers: Andronico's Community Markets in San Francisco; Nugget Markets in Sacramento, Calif.; and online retailer Peapod, based in Chicago. More than 500 products now on the market, predominately tilapia and pangasius, carry the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) logo. After debuting in 2012, ASC-labeled products can be found in 24 countries. Canadian salmon farmer Skuna Bay announced two new distribution partnerships to service six U.S. states. Seattle Fish Co. of Kansas City serves Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Nebraska. Another partnership with Connecticut Shellfsh Co. brings the product to Connecticut and expands distribution beyond New York City to Long Island and upstate New York. Also, Skuna Bay's entire production chain (feed, production and processing) earned Best Aquaculture Practices certifcation. Oceana enlisted 450 chefs, restaurant owners and culinary leaders from all 50 states to sign a letter urging Congress to pass the SAFE Seafood Act. Signed by Mario Batali, Daniel Boulud, Anthony Bourdain, Eric Ripert, Barton Seaver and others, the letter urges a traceability requirement for all seafood sold in the United States. Mountain Valley employees will work out of the same facilities in Montrose and all operations will be conducted as Seattle Fish Co. U.S. fshing ports landed 9.6 billion pounds of seafood in 2012. Altogether, Americans consumed 4.5 billion pounds of seafood, according to fgures released by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Fisheries Service. Commercial fshermen landed 9.6 billion pounds of fsh and shellfsh in 2012, valued at $5.1 billion (€3.7 billion), according to NOAA. Both the landings and value of seafood caught remain higher than the 10-year average of 9.2 billion pounds and $4.1 billion, although they are slightly down from 2011. "Healthy, sustainable fsh and shellfsh stocks are incredibly important to our nation's social and economic fabric," says Sam Rauch, acting assistant administrator for NOAA Fisheries. "Te high landings and value of seafood in 2012 support the three-decade long efort that has gone into ending overfshing in the United States. Tanks to our partners, the regional fshery management councils and especially U.S. fshermen, we now have some of the most responsibly managed, sustainable fsheries in the world." Aquaculture contributed only 5 percent of production, with Washington and Maine leading the nation in fsh farming, primarily Atlantic salmon. Washington, Virginia and Louisiana lead in shellfsh farming, primarily oysters. Te report also shows that the Alaska port of Dutch Harbor led the nation with the highest amount of fsh landed — primarily walleye pollock and king crab — for the 16th consecutive year. Dutch Harbor fshermen landed 752 million pounds, up from 706 million pounds in 2011. And for the 13th consecutive year, New Bedford, Mass., had the highest-valued catch at $411 million, due mostly to the sea scallop fshery, which accounted for more than 80 percent of the value of the city's seafood landings. — April Forristall Snap SHOTS Clamming up: NOAA released a video profling American surf clams, the frst U.S. fshery to operate under an individual transferable quota system. The fshery is the "model of sustainability management," according to NOAA. "It's really a forerunner for fshery sustainability. The American surf clam strikes a balance between responsible harvesting and market growth," says National Fisheries Institute Clam Committee Chairman Guy Simmons.
